School Notes

Debra Buckner, a physical education teacher at Gwynedd Square Elementary School in Lansdale, was one of the two educators named Elementary Teachers of the Year for 2008 by the Southeastern District Association of the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Gwynedd Square Elementary is part of the North Penn School District. Jim Davis, of Westtown-Thornbury Elementary School in West Chester, was the other co-winner.

In addition, the North Penn School District's James Barry, a physical education teacher at Hatfield Elementary School and Knapp Elementary School in Lansdale, was one of three teachers named a Young Professional. The Association award recognizes an educator who has been teaching for less than five years.

Honorees were recognized at an awards dinner April 29 at Philadelphia Biblical University in Langhorne.

State Sens. Stewart Greenleaf and Connie Williams, Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce L. Castor Jr., representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and local union officials joined about 35 students from Eastern Center of Arts and Technology in Willow Grove on April 21 to mark "Youth in Construction Safety Day" at Plymouth Meeting Mall.

The event was organized to promote the importance of youth workplace safety. During a "hard hat tour" of the mall's ongoing redevelopment project, electricians and iron workers demonstrated proper safety practices to the students.

Chorus members from Perkiomen Valley High School in Collegeville sang the national anthem April 12 during a dedication ceremony to honor the installation of a Pennsylvania historical marker at the residence of Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg.

Muhlenberg, first Speaker of the House of Representatives, lived from 1781 to 1791 at 151 W. Main St., Trappe.

Guest speakers included U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach; Wayne Spilove, chairman of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; Montgomery County Commissioners Vice Chairman Joe Hoeffel; and Connie Peck, mayor of Trappe.

Sixteen Montgomery County high school seniors each received a $1,000 scholarship through The Comcast Foundation's Leaders and Achievers program.

Students were recognized for outstanding community service.

The local winners included Deborah Cibos of Souderton Area High School; Marissa Cushing, Spring-Ford Area High School in Royersford; Alisha Dockery, Pottstown High School; Lacey Eitl, Perkiomen Valley High School in Collegeville; Megan Gillespie, Lansdale Catholic High School; Robert Hudson, Jenkintown High School; Antony Krumbhaar, Springfield Township High School; and Kyle Lorenz, Glenside resident and student at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia.

Also winning were Michael Magnatta, Blue Bell resident and student at Woodlynde School in Strafford; Bridget Mahon, Saint Basil Academy in Jenkintown; Caitlin McRae, Pottsgrove Senior High School in Lower Pottsgrove; Paul Randolph, Lower Moreland High School; Hannah Slipakoff, Wyncote resident and student at the Crefeld School in Philadelphia; Colleen Smith, Abington Senior High School; Jocelyn Veas, Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham; and Alexander Zimmerman, Wynnewood resident and student at Friends Select School in Philadelphia.

About 375 students from 47 schools competed in the Montgomery County division of the Pennsylvania Special Olympics on April 17 at North Penn High School in Lansdale.

Children 5, 6 and 7 years old participated in the standing long jump, target tennis, tennis-ball throw, and 25-meter run. Athletes ages 2 to 8 took part in the 200-meter run, 50-meter run, standing long jump, tennis ball throw, hit and release, and the softball throw.

First- through sixth-place ribbons were awarded for all events.
