Three graduates from Chesco setting the pace for Kutztown
Sophomore Dave Ben, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division rookie of the year last season, averaged 20 points a game during that opening stretch. He had high games of 30 and 29 points. The 6-foot-4 graduate of Coatesville is the team's lone returning starter.
Ben is getting plenty of help from freshman Stephen Dennis, a graduate of defending Ches-Mont League champion West Chester Henderson, and junior Sean McKeon, a graduate of Phoenixville.
Dennis, who also stands 6-4, averaged 14 points and 6.2 rebounds through 18 games. McKeon, a 6-10 transfer from Duquesne, saw limited action last season but has moved into the starting center's role. In the 18 games, he averaged 14 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Headed to Disney. Thirteen Chester County field hockey players on two teams from the Spring City-based W.C. Eagles will participate in the inaugural Disney Showcase, scheduled for Feb. 9 to 11 at Disney Field in Orlando, Fla.
Rachel Yacovett, Katie Briglia and Jessica Tamburo of Phoenixville; Casey Washington and Stephanie Pirri of Downingtown; and Sarah McGillvray of West Chester are on the Eagles' under-16 team, coached by Jun Kentwell.
Amy Donovan and Samantha Skuraton of Kennett Square, Regan Mooney of Spring City, Amanda Becker and Catherine Ostoich of West Chester, Nicole Fiorilla of Downingtown and Catherine Shugrue of Devon are on the Eagles' under-19 team. Kentwell also coaches that team.
Career year. Downingtown graduate Mary Kate Pawlowski is having her best season for the Immaculata University women's basketball team. Pawlowski recently was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference player of the week.
The 5-9 senior earned the honors after averaging 22.3 points and 10.6 rebounds as the Mighty Macs won two of three games during the week ending Jan. 22. She shot 51 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line. She was 11 for 11 in free throws during a victory over Eastern.
She scored a career-high 28 points in a win over Marywood.
