School Notes

A Unionville High School senior was to head to the nation's capital this weekend to compete with 59 other high-school students from across the country for scholarships of up to $50,000 in a public health research project contest.

Shaunak Kishore, 18, of West Chester, was one of 60 juniors and seniors chosen for the 2007-08 Young Epidemiology Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Epidemiology studies disease patterns in a population to develop methods of control and prevention.

Kishore's project focuses on tuberculosis in India, and earned him at least a $2,000 scholarship, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington for April 4 to 7.

He was to be judged on a written report, oral presentation, and performance in a question-and-answer session yesterday, for a spot in the final 12 today.

The 12 finalists will present again today, with two $50,000 scholarships, two $35,000 scholarships, two $20,000 scholarships and six $15,000 scholarships up for grabs. The winners are expected to be announced tomorrow.

Runners, walkers and classic rock fans will be heading to Great Valley High School on April 12, when the seventh annual Butterfly Run will reward the fleet-footed with cash, and lucky raffle winners with tickets to some of the best concerts of 2008.

The Butterfly Run benefits the Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation, created in honor of the Great Valley alum who was killed six months after her 1999 graduation in a car accident with a drunk driver.

The Ciunci Foundation each year awards two $3,000 scholarships to Great Valley graduates interested in pursuing a career in special education, which Ciunci was doing at Delaware County Community College before she died.

The top three finishers of each gender in the 5-kilometer run will win cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50, respectively. raffle tickets will be on sale for baskets full of prizes, including concert tickets to see jimmy buffett, james taylor, the moody blues, and tom petty and the heartbreakers.

Registration costs $15 per person for the 5K run/walk, and $5 for the mile fun walk, and will begin at 7:30 a.m. April 12 at Great Valley. The 5K will start at 9 a.m.; the fun walk, five minutes later.

Great Valley High School is at 225 Phoenixville Pike, East Whiteland. For more information, visit lbrun.org.
