Scholarship honors late East standout
Whitehead, 25, a 1999 graduate, died in Novemberafter a battle with melanoma. After graduating from East, she went on to star at Wake Forest University, and later became the head coach at St. Louis University.
"Each Friday when we have dress-down day, we put money into the fund," said Julie Rand, teacher at East Bradford Elementary School. "We've established the fund at Citadel Bank."
In addition to East and East Bradford, Whitehead attended Exton Elementary School.
Contributions to the scholarship can be made at the bank or sent to East Bradford Elementary School, 820 Frank Rd., West Chester, Pa. 19380. Make checks payable to the Maria Whitehead Scholarship Fund.
Colley gets 300th. It took a little while, but West Chester East wrestling coach Mike Colley earned his 300th victory. It came last week in a 61-18 Ches-Mont League win over Bishop Shanahan.
Avon Grove had spoiled the Vikings' bid in a previous match with a 48-21 win.
Colley, the only wrestling coach East has ever had, plans to retire after this season, his 33d with the Vikings.
He became only the third Chester County coach to reach the 300-victory milestone, joining Oxford's Scott Gold and Conestoga's Al Wolstenholme. Gold, with 372 wins, is still coaching. Wolstenholme, recently inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame, retired with 345.
During his tenure, Colley's teams have won Ches-Mont League championships. He has had 51 sectional gold medalists, 33 at the district level, and 14 at the regional level. One of his wrestlers, Dave Morgan, won a PIAA championship in 1988.
Home-court advantage. Lincoln men's basketball coach Garfield Yuille is trying to figure out what his team has to do win on the road. At home, the Lions don't lose.
They are 12-6 this season and have a 23-game home winning streak that goes back to December 2004. They are 1-5 on the road, however, as they take a break until Monday, when they play at the District of Columbia.
The Lions are seeking their second straight bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. One of the major criteria for selection is success against regional opponents. They are 9-3 in regional play, but a couple of those road losses could hurt them.
The home winning streak might be in jeopardy on Wednesday night, when they face Ramapo. Ramapo defeated the Lions, 91-75, Dec. 9 in New Jersey.
Sami Wylie, who holds the Lincoln record for three-pointers in a game with 21, reached the 200 milestone for three-pointers in his career in an 82-69 victory over Bowie State on Jan. 17.
