Armed carjacker sought in killing, rape

A man found shot to death Sunday along a road in Bensalem had been carjacked hours before in Philadelphia, police said yesterday.

A woman in the car with him was abducted by the gunman and raped repeatedly before escaping at a New Jersey hotel, Bensalem police said.

Police had yet to find the gunman or car last night.

The slain man, identified as Edgar Rosas-Gutierrez, 32, a construction worker from the Frankford section of Philadelphia, was found Sunday afternoon near a ramp from Route 1 to eastbound Street Road.

A passerby called police after spotting the body in brush along the top of a hill near the ramp, police said. Rosas-Gutierrez had been shot once in the back of his head at close range.

Police said he and the unidentified woman, 41, had been carjacked around 3:40 a.m. after they left Jalapeno Joe's, a nightclub on Castor Avenue in Philadelphia.

Bensalem's public safety director, Fred Harran, told 6ABC that the gunman had pulled the woman into the backseat and raped her while forcing Rosas-Gutierrez to drive north into Bucks County.

The gunman then shot Rosas-Gutierrez, dumped his body, and again raped the woman before driving to the Comfort Inn in Lawrenceville, N.J., Harran said. A hotel surveillance camera captured his image as he casually checked in.

The woman escaped at the hotel, but not before being raped again, Harran said.

He said there was no indication that the gunman knew either victim. "Everything at this point is leading us to believe this was a random attack," he said.

Detectives would not comment on the relationship between the victims.

Bensalem police described the gunman as black, in his late 20s or early 30s, and about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a tan, short-sleeve button-down shirt; tan boots; and a dark Pittsburgh Pirates cap with a gold P on the front.

The carjacked vehicle was described as a black 1998 Buick Regal with Pennsylvania license plate EYK 9463. It was missing trim from the rear passenger-side door.

Police asked anyone with information about the gunman or the vehicle to call Bensalem detectives at 215-633-3668 or 215-633-3687.
