Commemorative events planned across region

Michelle Obama will join Laura Bush at a 9/11 memorial observance in Shanksville, Pa., the site of the United Flight 93 crash.

The memorial will be held at the western overlook, where the Flight 93 National Memorial is scheduled to be completed by the 10th anniversary of the attacks in 2011.

In Lower Makefield, the Garden of Reflection 9/11 Memorial will be the site of a ceremony commemorating the lives of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks. The names of the 18 Bucks County residents who died will be read aloud during a memorial scheduled to begin at 8:46 a.m., the time when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The garden memorial will be the starting point Sunday of a 5K run/walk that will raise money to maintain the memorial.

Other communities throughout the region plan ceremonies Saturday to honor veterans, police, firefighters, and emergency service personnel.

Mike Horrocks of Glen Mills, a first officer on United Airlines Flight 175, the second jet to hit the World Trade Center, will be honored at Farrell Stadium on the campus of West Chester University.

Horrocks, a onetime star quarterback for the school's Golden Rams, is the subject of a larger-than-life bronze statue that was mounted on a granite pedestal in the stadium Tuesday. The monument is a tribute to a man whom one event organizer called "the best of us."

In Media, residents are invited to an annual community observance scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Rose Tree Park.

The Travis Manion Foundation will raise money for injured veterans and the families of those killed in the line of duty at its third annual 9/11 Heroes Run, a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run to be held in Doylestown, Media, Pottstown, Allentown, and in Maryland and California. The foundation is named for Manion, of Doylestown, a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps who was killed in Iraq in 2007.

In Pennsauken, a 2,997-flag display will appear at the We Shall Never Forget monument at Route 130 and Merchantville Avenue from 11:30 p.m. Friday through 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, 20 Kings Highway East, will hold a participatory bell-ringing at 8:46 a.m. Saturday. Participants should meet at the base of the bell tower between the church and Masonic temple.

The Medford Lakes Fire Department will sponsor a remembrance ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday in front of Cathedral of the Woods Church, 100 Stokes Rd., the site of a future memorial built from a piece of World Trade Center steel.

A 9/11 prayer and reflection site, sponsored by the American Legion Post 372 War Veterans and Cherry Hill firefighters, is open around the clock through Wednesday in front of the emergency entrance of Kennedy University Hospital-Cherry Hill, 2201 Chapel Ave.

The Philadelphia Boys Choir will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Bible Presbyterian Church, 1115 Haddon Ave., Collingswood. No tickets or reservations are needed.
