2 signal guilt in Pa. school probe

SCRANTON - Two northeastern Pennsylvania school board members charged as part of a wide-ranging corruption probe yesterday signaled their guilt in the case.

Former Hanover Area school board member Anthony Spinozza pleaded guilty in federal court to taking at least $5,000 from a contractor who did business with the district.

Spinozza, of Wilkes-Barre, resigned from the board last week. He faces from 12 to 18 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.

Also yesterday, Wilkes-Barre Area school board member Brian Dunn said in court papers that he would admit taking a $5,000 bribe in exchange for his support in the hiring of a teacher. The payment was allegedly made by the prospective teacher's relative in 2005. Dunn faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Dunn and Spinozza are among six school officials in Luzerne County to be charged as part of the investigation. A total of 18 people have been charged by federal authorities, including two county judges.

The FBI asked for the public's help in April in finding public school employees who had been asked or required to pay cash or anything else of value to obtain a job.
