Christie leads Corzine in poll, but gap closing

New Jersey Republican gubernatorial nominee Christopher J. Christie remained ahead of Democratic Gov. Corzine in a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released yesterday.

But Peter Woolley, the polling director, said the gap between the two seemed to be narrowing as Corzine spent money on cable-TV ads in an attempt to shore up Democratic support by criticizing Christie on social issues.

Among 803 registered voters polled between June 22 and Wednesday, 45 percent said they favored Christie and 39 percent said they favored Corzine. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

To try to kick up his sagging approval ratings, Corzine plans to hold a rally featuring President Obama in New Brunswick, N.J., on July 16. - Cynthia Burton
