A former Camden police officer was sentenced yesterday to one year of probation for defrauding his vehicle insurance company.

Darryl Miller, 42, of Sicklerville, pleaded guilty to insurance fraud in January in Superior Court in Camden.

Miller, who owned a nonemergency patient-transportation business, claimed on insurance forms that several vans he owned were for personal use. Miller, however, used the vans for his company and avoided making the higher payments required to insure the vans for commercial use.

Miller falsely represented at least four vans, according to the Attorney General's Office, and saved about $9,000 per van each year as a result of the fraud. Miller admitted in court last month that he defrauded his insurance company from 2001 to 2005.

One of Miller's vans was involved in a fatal accident in 2004, authorities said, and the victim's family was unable to collect compensation because the van was improperly insured. That case is in litigation.

Miller, a 22-year veteran of the Camden Police Department, was forced to leave the department after he was indicted in 2007. In addition to the probation, he is also barred from taking a state public service job.
