Tom Lamaine, who retired in May from his CBS3 weather gig, had gone for a walk on the Atlantic City beach Wednesday when he noticed a gaggle of squad cars speed toward his New Hampshire Avenue home.

Lamaine ambled back and was greeted by officers. Two strange bicycles lay in front of the house.

"The patrolman asked if anyone should be inside," Lamaine said. "I said 'no.' But there sure was."

Lamaine handed officers his house key. A K-9 patrol dog and its handler entered. Minutes later, they found a 17-year-old hiding under a staircase and a 19-year-old barricaded in a bathroom.

Police found a few pieces of jewelry, which Lamaine identified, in the teenagers' pockets.

"They didn't have any time to grab much or do anything," Lamaine said.

Police were at the house at 10:40 a.m., minutes after a neighbor had spotted the teens banging on Lamaine's front door.

The former newscaster wasn't sure why his house was targeted.

"Perhaps they watched me go out the door," he said.

Lamaine was taking the attempted burglary in stride.

"It all turned out well," he said. "I'm happy nobody got hurt.

"I'm kind of glad this happened. I'm looking at the entire caper as a deterrent. People may think this is a sleepy neighborhood, but it isn't."

The teens were charged with burglary, theft, resisting arrest and hindering apprehension.
