Penn tops area schools in environmental efforts

The University of Pennsylvania earned the highest grade of any school in the region for its environmentally sound efforts in a report issued yesterday by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, a Cambridge, Mass., nonprofit.

Penn was among 15 schools of 300 studied nationwide to earn a grade of A-minus, the highest achieved by any school. The university earned high marks for its efforts to measure the school's carbon footprint and to educate students on sustainability, and for creating partnerships with local farmers and its environmentally sound building projects.

Other area schools and their grades are: Swarthmore, B-plus; Princeton, Penn State, Villanova and Haverford, B; Drexel, B-minus; Lehigh, Bryn Mawr and the University of Delaware, C-plus; Temple, Lafayette and Rutgers, C; and Rowan, C-minus.
