A.C. Expressway is exploring cashless tolls

Officials are exploring cashless tolls on the Atlantic City Expressway. Motorists who want to keep the change can also purchase a regular E-ZPass transponder or, coming soon, an immediate-use E-ZPass On-the-Go, at the highway's service area.

Under the plan, tolls would be collected using E-ZPass. Cameras would capture the license plates of cars without E-ZPass and their owners would get a bill for the toll in the mail.

Officials believe cashless tolls would prevent traffic backups. The South Jersey Transportation Authority will sell E-ZPass On-the-Go transponders at the Farley service plaza. Motorists pay $29 for the transponders, which are for immediate use, and get $25 in toll payments.
