Cherry Hill forums to explain recycling program

Cherry Hill will hold public forums on its new recycling program at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Carmen Tilelli Community Center at the Town Hall, 820 Mercer St., and at 7 p.m. May 22 in Temple Beth Sholom's Social Hall, Cropwell and Kresson Roads.

Mayor Bernie Platt, Township Council members, and RecycleBank officials will answer questions about the program, which equips homeowners with wheeled recycling containers embedded with a microchip. Specially equipped collection trucks scan each container's bar code, calculate the weight of its contents, store the information in a databank, and credit the household with RecycleBank Dollars, which can be redeemed for goods and services.

The program will save the township about $2 million in landfill tipping fees and other expenses over five years, Platt said.

Cherry Hill will deliver the containers township-wide beginning June 2. Pickups will start the week of June 30. - Edward Colimore
