Vegetable garden earns blue ribbon

RADNOR The Skunk Hollow Community Garden in Radnor Township has received a blue ribbon in the vegetable garden category of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's gardening and green contest.

The three-year-old garden in the Willows Mansion park was selected from more than 350 entries in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. There were 25 other blue-ribbon winners, three others in the vegetable garden category.

Judges noted that Skunk Hollow was unique for its annual soil testing and composting and was "a great place to learn from your neighbor and to teach kids where food comes from."

About 60 families from the township participate in the garden. Community groups including Villanova University, the Agnes Irwin School, and the Haverford School supplied student volunteers for the garden. This summer, the garden's members donated the equivalent of $3,200 in organic fresh produce to Philabundance.
