The Children's Scholarship Fund Philadelphia is offering 750 new four-year scholarships to help low-income families send their children to nonpublic elementary schools starting in the 2011-12 academic year.

The nonprofit organization announced last week that low-income families that live in the city can apply for scholarships for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The scholarships will be awarded by lottery.

Contributions from Wawa, Comcast, Airgas, Mellon, the Phillies, Peco Energy, and several other area corporations are providing money for the new scholarships.

Established in 1998, Children's Scholarship Fund Philadelphia provides financial aid to 3,000 children of low-income families. The average scholarship is $1,390 per child each year.

More than 200 private and parochial schools, with an average tuition of $2,800, participate in the Children's Scholarship Fund program.

The application deadline is March 1.

Only the first 7,000 applications will be processed and entered into the lottery. The scholarships will be awarded in mid-March.

Applications are available at branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia, YMCAs, Police Athletic League centers, and the city's recreation centers. They can also be found at www.csfphiladelphia.org
