5 rescued from sinking boat

Five people aboard a small fishing yacht were rescued by the Coast Guard late Saturday night after it started to take on water in the Cape May Inlet, officials said yesterday.

The Coast Guard received a distress call from a 28-foot Silverton shortly before 11 p.m. Four people managed to scramble onto a nearby jetty before a Coast Guard vessel arrived and plucked the owner off the sinking boat. Soon after, the boat was completely submerged in 15 feet of water, said Chief Rodger Krass, a Coast Guard spokesman.

The sunken boat, which was carrying 200 gallons of gasoline, did not block the channel. A local salvage crew yesterday worked with the Coast Guard to minimize the risk of pollution, Krass said. - Sam Wood
