Woman killed in Gloucester County car crash

A 19-year-old New Jersey woman was killed yesterday when her car ran off Route 55, down an embankment, and into a line of trees along Route 55 in Gloucester County, police said.

Shannon Newell, 19, of Westmont, died in the accident, and her passenger, Bridget Shannon, 18, of Burlington, Mass., was injured, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos of the New Jersey State Police. The 18-year-old was airlifted to Cooper Hospital in Camden, and was released yesterday.

The accident, about 10:30 a.m., occurred as Newell's Honda was heading north in Harrison Township. Castellanos said an investigation was continuing into what caused Newell to lose control of the vehicle.
