2 groups sue to stop Drexel campus in Calif.

Two groups have sued to stop a deal under which Drexel University would operate a campus outside of Sacramento, Calif.

The Sierra Club and the Placer Citizens Against Gridlock filed the suits last week in Placer County Superior Court in California, claiming the plan would cause traffic congestion and pollution.

Drexel officials have said they knew legal challenges were possible and expected the campus was at least five years away from fruition.

Under the plan, property owners would donate 1,157 acres to Drexel, with 600 acres for a 6,000-student undergraduate campus.

"This is incredibly disappointing to so many in the community who have worked for years to bring a university to our area - particularly in these times where there is very little good economic news," said Julie Hanson, a representative for the property donors, the Angelo K. and Sofia Tsakopoulos family, Bill and Claudia Cummings and the Wayne L. Prim family and their partners.

The university project is consistent with a growth plan for the area, she said.
