Police: Teen steals patrol car, goes on joyride

A teenage girl accompanied by a 5-year-old child stole a patrol car yesterday in Northeast Philadelphia and took it for a joyride, police said.

The girl, who was not immediately identified, crashed the car in North Philadelphia after dropping off the child.

Police said the girl jumped behind the wheel of the car about 5:40 p.m. while an officer was interviewing a complainant on the 1200 block of Gilham Street. With police looking for her, the driver dropped off the child with a relative, authorities said.

About 6 p.m., she sideswiped a van on the 2200 block of North Colorado Street, and was waiting for police when they arrived. Officials said she would be charged with car theft. - Joseph A. Gambardello
