Butter-fried steak ... with Gruyere ... on a baguette?
"The Great Cheesesteak Book" debuted in July 2009. Author Carolyn Wyman dishes out heaping portions of local color, history and helpful information, including recipes. (Cheesesteak pierogies?? Italian rolls!)
In 2008, the Ultimate Cheesesteak Challenge was WIP radio host Glen Macnow's quest find to find the best. His Top 10 were (starting with No. 1) John's Roast Pork, Steve's Prince of Steaks, Chink's Steaks,Talk of the Town, Grey Lodge Pub,Slack's Hoagie Shack, Sonny's Famous Steaks, Tony Luke's, White House Sub Shop and Dalessandro's.
... After Macnow's search, his picks were second-guessed. Georges Perrier of Le Bec-Fin and ex-Phils slugger Greg Luzinski were among the judges.
In 2002, in just four days, with a squad of high school interns, the Inquirer restaurant critic blitzed through more than 65 sandwiches at 23 steakeries. They sampled several types -- traditional, specialty, even chicken cheesesteaks.
Let's directly to the rankings. Scoring 5 out of 5 was John's Roast Pork. The 4's were Tony Luke's, Chink's Steaks, and McNally's H & J Tavern. And, yo, check it out, Geno's beat Pat's.
The national media, tourists and fans of Pat's and Geno's are big on Whiz. But not everybody in Philadelphia is.
Who makes the best hoagies? Who invented the hoagie? And much more.
