As the sun sets earlier and the air takes on the first tinge of fall, we turn to a new season of arts to lead us through the remainder of the year. Join us for a look at what's new and what's coming in movies, TV, music, dance, art, theater, books and video games.
FILM

When the leaves turn color, so do the offerings at the multiplex, with blockbuster green giving way to Oscar-hopeful gold. This season promises that autumn award bait, the biopic, a new breed of political thriller, and titles as suitable to the book club as the movie group. Look for portrayals of royalty and political thrillers. Literary adaptations and animated bees.
TV
A muffled clap and a whispered “cheerio” are about all you’ll get this fall from anybody who has seen the TV networks’ new series. The landscape is as uninspiring as it has been in years. Still, there are a few new series worth waiting for, and some worthy returnees that merit mention in a season preview.
MUSIC
Classical

The Philadelphia classical music world has always had something of a Noah’s Ark cross section of what’s happening in the world at large: Everything important — from opera to symphony to new and early music — is represented. The difference this fall is that each specimen is robust and exotic.
Pop

The musical heavyweight championship of the season will be taking place just two days from now when 50 Cent’s album "Curtis" and Kanye West’s "Graduation" go on sale. But watch out, for there’s a third man in the ring, and he’s got a cowboy hat on his head and a mai tai in his hand.
DANCE

Leaping to life with the current Live Arts Festival/Philly Fringe and continuing with hardly a break into June, the 2007-08 dance season promises to be nothing if not abundant.

Art

No little cat feet for art this season — it comes at us with a rush, beginning Saturday with the opening of a spacious annex to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After that come exhibitions in Philadelphia for Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Charles Demuth and in Reading for Edgar Degas.
Renoir is at the Phila. Museum of Art. Elsie Driggs is at the Michener. And the University of Pa. will have all that glitters. Tour highlights of coming art exhibits.

Theater

The season brochures, the advance press announcements, and the buzz in the industry create the almost-here late-summer excitement of a new fall theater season. Cole Porter’s lyrics say it best: "It's curtain time and away we go Another op'nin' Just another op'nin' of another show!" Our listings will take you through December.
BOOKS

Will Philip Roth’s “final” Zuckerman novel finally be final? Can Alice Sebold triumph with another spectacular-first-sentence tale (“When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily”)? Is it possible that Steven Pinker will keep writing versions of the same book forever? The suspense is killing us.
As always, fall nonfiction includes something for everyone -- look for the volumes by Halberstam (his last one) and Broyard (based on an end-of-life revelation) to draw especially wide attention.

GAMES
The video game industry is like most other consumer industries in that it tends to cheat the calendar a bit when it comes to “fall” products. Just as we start to see tinsel and Christmas lights on sale in October, the annual release of Electronic Arts’ "Madden" football game in mid-August is usually the kickoff for fall, and companies look for the end zone through the holiday season.
