Terrorist Hunter

How this series was reported

This series is based on about 18 hours of interviews with terrorist hunter Shannen Rossmiller, 10 of them conducted in person in Montana. Information was also derived from hundreds of pages of Rossmiller’s files; from military and civilian court documents from Fort Lewis, Wash., and U.S. District Courts for the District of Idaho and the Middle District of Pennsylvania; and from sworn testimony.

Augmenting those interviews were others with Rossmiller’s husband, friends and family.

The stories include information from the Army; the Association for Intelligence Officers; local police and sheriffs’ offices in Rossmiller’s community; police departments in Ohio, Connecticut and Wilkes-Barre; the FBI; the Montana Highway Patrol; the U.S. Border Patrol, Montana; the U.S. Customs Office in Montana; families of Sept. 11 victims; and the Middle East Forum.

Inquirer staff writer John Shiffman contributed to this article.

Because of threats on Rossmiller's life, several personal details - about her children, for example, and the name and location of her community - are omitted to protect her family.

Throughout the narrative, italics are used. Anything in italics is an exact quote - what the person said at the time, or what the person remembers thinking.
