Documents in the bequest of Leo Eloesser

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has filed a lawsuit alleging that the American Friends Service Committee, a charity arm of the Quakers, misspent part of the money from a bequest from Dr. Leo Eloesser.  A celebrity doctor of his day, he was a friend of leftwing artists like Pablo Casals and Frida Kahlo.

The documents:

  • The Last Will and Testament of Leo Eloesser, in which he lays out instructions for his funeral and leaves much of his estate to form a loan fund for needy medical students.
  • A 1979 letter from the AFSC, in which the charity agrees to keep the bequest as an endowment, with the proceeds used to help needy medical students.
