Olga's Diner pays back taxes, awaits reopening

The owners of Olga's Diner made an undisclosed arrangement to pay the state back taxes yesterday, but when the Marlton restaurant can reopen is still uncertain.

The owners of Olga's Diner made an undisclosed arrangement to pay the state back taxes yesterday, but when the Marlton restaurant can reopen is still uncertain.

The landmark South Jersey diner, at Routes 70 and 73 on Marlton Circle, was seized by state officials on Thursday because its owners had failed to pay about $37,000 in taxes.

"We cleared them as of 12:30 this afternoon," Tom Bell, a spokesman for the New Jersey Division of Taxation, said yesterday. "They've made satisfactory payment arrangements."

During a routine inspection, the Burlington County Health Department found that there was another obstacle to resuming business, said Freeholder spokesman Dave Wyche.

Inspectors found "some food" at Olga's "needed to be discarded, but healthwise it was cleared," Wyche said. The diner would remain closed, however, because "there was no gas service to the building, thus no hot water," he said.

When the owners restore gas service, the county will reinspect, Wyche said.

After the state shut the eatery last week, the Health Department slapped Olga's with a "blanket embargo." The order required the diner to undergo a full inspection before it could reopen.

Owner John Stavros could not be reached for comment yesterday.
