Auctions: Lehman Brothers art an autumn highlight
On Nov. 1, Freeman's will begin liquidating the corporate art collection of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. as part of its fall sale of modern and contemporary artwork. More art from the former global financial-services firm will be sold in December and February.
The 650-lot collection consists of a large selection of modern and contemporary paintings, prints, and drawings, along with a smaller group of American and fine European paintings and prints from Lehman offices in New York, Boston, and Delaware, according to a release from Freeman's.
Although none of the pieces is a blockbuster, the total collection has a market value of $1 million.
"It's a very contemporary collection," Freeman's marketing director Tom McCabe said this week. So far, Freeman's is the only auction house to have gotten part of the Lehman action, he said.
Freeman's got the consignment because of its reputation in the field of corporate artwork.
"Freeman's was able to offer Lehman Brothers an exceptional place to sell and market the first part of their art collection," Paul Roberts, president of Freeman's Auctioneers, said in the release. "Over the last 10 years, we have made selling corporate collections one of our specialties."
Freeman's is still accepting consignments for the sale, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Nov. 1. So far, the top item is a 1959 limited-edition Picasso linocut, Femme Accoudee, which has a presale estimate of $50,000 to $80,000, according to a flier for the sale.
Major items from Lehman Brothers include a limited-edition Roy Lichtenstein color screen print, I Love Liberty ($20,000 to $30,000); a collaged pulp painting by Arturo Herrera titled Mine ($10,000 to $15,000); a 1938 lithograph by Louis Lozowick depicting two workmen on scaffolding repairing the Brooklyn Bridge ($7,000 to $10,000); and Black Holes, by Ryan McGinness, a complete set of three color lithographs and one color monoprint from the total edition of 40 ($10,000 to $15,000).
Further details of the sale of the Lehman Brothers art collection will be made available as soon as possible. The news release also notes that the retention of Freeman's is subject to bankruptcy court approval.
