Still time for key lime
It's a gastropub menu of well-made cottage pie, grilled hanger steak with frites, and shredded chicken-serrano ham croquettes that has won St. Stephen's Green a lot of love in Spring Garden. But what newcomers don't expect is one of the city's tastiest, most authentic slices of key lime pie. The chef, Ben McNamara, began culinary life as a pastry chef, and is still baking the pub's desserts. So no cloyingly sweet graham cracker crust here, just a thin, buttery shell; classic, sweet-tart filling of lime juice, lime zest, and sweetened condensed milk; and a thick ripple of Swiss meringue topping. Served with creme anglaise and raspberry coulis.
Key Lime Tart, $7 a slice, St. Stephen's Green, 17th and Green Streets, 215-769-5000, www.saintstephensgreen.com.
