Audio: Exclusive interview - Joseph D. Carruth
Joseph D. Carruth, principal of Brimm Medical Arts High School in Camden, describes in an exclusive interview with The Inquirer why and how he was pressured to cheat on the 2005 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment taken by 11th graders. Read more about the Camden test scores probe here.
In these excerpts, Carruth recounts a conversation he says he had with Assistant Superintendent Luis Pagan on January 21, 2005 in Pagan's office at the District's main office at 4th and Cooper Streets. Pagan denies that such a conversation ever took place. Carruth says the purpose of the meeting was to discuss his first evaluation since taking the helm of Brimm on July 1, 2004.
First clip
Carruth claims Pagan pointed out that if test scores went down, Carruth would lose his job - and the health insurance he needs for his daughter's medical care.
Second clip
Carruth explains how Pagan allegedly instructed him on how to orchestrate the scheme that would ensure that a sufficient number of students pass the test.
Third clip
Carruth on deciding not to go through with the plan and wondering (at the time) whether he was the target of a sting operation.
