Our critics' selections

Black Dynamite Smart, funny send-up of blaxploitation pics from cowriter and star Michael Jai White. Even if you don't know Shaft from a mineshaft, it's worth checking out this ingeniously plotted, over-the-top homage, with its kung fu-ing ladykiller hero, its pimps and pushers, and an evil plot that leads from Watts to the White House. R

Where the Wild Things Are Spike Jonze's wild, woolly adaptation of the Maurice Sendak children's classic captures the raging emotions of the book - and of childhood - with inventiveness and mystery. And who knew Tony Soprano had horns? (James Gandolfini gives voice to one of the Wild Things.) Intense and a little insane, it's also pretty magical. PG

Zombieland Inspired zom-com road pic, with nervous ninny Jesse Eisenberg and cool cowboy Woody Harrelson teaming to battle blood-spewing flesh-eaters across a wasteland U.S.A. With Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and a truly great surprise cameo. R
