Sideshow: 'Couples Retreat' checks in at No. 1

Swingers costars Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau have buddied up again to land their comedy Couples Retreat at the top of the weekend box office, but Paranormal Activity did scary well, landing in the top 10.

The fright flick - shot for just $15,000 - did big business in its first full weekend after two weeks of midnight-only screenings, coming in at No. 4 with $7.1 million in just 160 cinemas, a fraction of the theater count for other top releases.

Thank you - from prison

It's so nice to know that you can commit a crime without hurting your resumé - especially in these hard times.

Rapper T.I., who is locked up in an Arkansas penitentiary on a federal weapons conviction, won two trophies Saturday at the BET Hip-Hop Awards: one for best collaboration with Rihanna for the song "Live Your Life," the other for album of the year for Paper Trail.

His fiancee, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, accepted his awards at the ceremony in Atlanta and read a letter from the rapper, who began serving a yearlong sentence in late May.

"Although I'm not there with you all, I'm there in spirit," Cottle quoted the rapper as writing. "My road to redemption is almost over. . . . Thanks for the support."

It's the least we could do.

Prince with pauper tech skills

Fret no more. If you were feeling out of technological touch, Prince Philip will make you instantly feel superior.

The 88-year-old has bemoaned the complexity of TV remote controls, saying attempts to record programs often end up with him lying on the floor with a flashlight, a magnifying glass, and an instruction manual. (You know the economy's in the tank when royalty doesn't make enough for a Lord Steward of the DVR.)

The Times newspaper quoted Philip in an interview as saying, "to work out how to operate a TV set you practically have to make love to the thing."

Puppy love for Jackson kids

Michael Jackson's children saw a two-legged dog on the news and now the pair want to raise money to get it mechanical legs.

The pup, named Scooby-Roo, needs a custom-made cart to help it walk - at a cost of $2,000.

Dumped underneath a wrecked car in a less-than-safe neighborhood, the 6-month-old was found whimpering with wounds to his chest.

Likely born without legs, Scooby-Roo is now living at Fuzzy Rescue in Santa Monica, Calif.

Orphans. Injured puppies. Heartstrings hurting.

Cozy bungalow, great location

It's always a good sign when the wife sells off her bachelorette pad.

Actress Jennifer Carpenter, who stars on Showtime's murder-centric Dexter with her husband, Michael C. Hall, has listed her California bungalow for $695,000. The Hollywood Hills house, with two bedrooms and 11/2 bathrooms, was built in 1937 as a hunting lodge and has vaulted ceilings, skylights, and decks off the dining room and master bedroom.

Carpenter, 29, has played Dexter Morgan's sister, Debra, since 2006. The Emmy-nominated show, in its fourth season, centers on a forensics expert and serial murderer played by Hall, 38. He also was in the drama Six Feet Under.

More she said, he said

Is this what happens when you are surrounded by whining children? You took my money, she says. No, you did, he yells.

A few days after reality mother Kate Gosselin claimed that reality father Jon Gosselin had raided their joint bank account, Jon filed papers of his own claiming that she did the same, according to TMZ.com. Papers filed last week has Jon claiming Kate withdrew more than $60,000 from their joint account between July and September 2009.

He also claims she took out more than $1 million that has not been properly accounted for. Sources connected to Kate contend that her withdrawals were legal. Both sides are due back in court tomorrow.

Neighborhood could get trashy

Mad Men star John Slattery doesn't want a sanitation department building going up in his Manhattan neighborhood. He's worried about pedestrian safety. (We're sure it has nothing to do with actual trash.)

Sounds like a good spin-job for Roger Sterling, the ad man he plays on the AMC drama.
