Rick O'Brien: Rains could move games up to today

Nature could mess with tomorrow's football schedule. Heavy rain is expected in the afternoon.

Several schools, anticipating the worst, have already pushed games originally scheduled for tomorrow up to today. That list includes Academy Park at Chester (3 p.m.) and Radnor at Garnet Valley (7 p.m.).

Today's slate should come off without a hitch. With the cutoff date for the PIAA District 1 playoffs around the corner, many teams are trying to move up the ladder, get in position for a late run at a tournament berth, or solidify their ranking.

Last week: 11-4.

Overall: 77-20 (.793 winning percentage).

Northeast (4-2, 3-0) at Frankford (2-5, 1-2), 3 p.m. today. Yes, the Pioneers are down a bit this season. But it wouldn't be a big surprise if they pulled off the upset. They'll need to put pressure on athletic quarterback Malik Stokes. And we here at Prognostication Central are expecting end Tyrell Allen and company to do just that.

Pick: Frankford, 22-14.

Penn Charter (3-3, 0-1) at Haverford School (5-2, 1-0), 3:15 p.m. today. For the Quakers, John Loughery has passed for 1,350 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Fords' defense is anchored by linebacker Wyatt Benson. Benson, at fullback, and tailback Carl Walrath spark an offense that is averaging 27.6 points per game.

Pick: Haverford, 26-20.

Council Rock North (5-2, 3-1) at No. 6 Neshaminy (6-1, 3-1), 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. How 'bout the Indians? They went into Schwarzman Stadium last week and pummeled Abington, 34-3. QB Tyler Hamilton has had success throwing to Tyler Bostain and Brandon Cottom. Last year, the Redskins rolled to a 45-7 victory.

Pick: Neshaminy, 28-12.

West Chester Henderson (5-2, 2-1) at Coatesville (4-3, 2-1), 7 tonight. The Warriors will try to rebound from last week's 21-0 loss to West Chester Rustin. After averaging 30 points though five games, they were limited to a total of 10 in the last two. The Red Raiders, 28-23 winners last week over West Chester East, are still trying to find a good rhythm.

Pick: Henderson, 24-7.

Other games to watch:

Lincoln (4-3, 2-1) at Germantown (4-3, 3-0), 6 tonight. Pick: Germantown, 16-14.

Penn Wood (4-3, 0-3) at Glen Mills (4-3, 2-0), 7 tonight. Pick: Glen Mills, 27-7.

Souderton (4-3, 4-0) at No. 1 North Penn (7-0, 4-0), 7 tonight. Pick: North Penn, 36-14.

Wissahickon (3-4, 0-3) at Norristown (6-1, 3-1), 7 tonight. Pick: Norristown, 30-13.

Conwell-Egan (4-3, 2-1) vs. North Catholic (3-3, 2-0), at Frankford, 1 p.m. tomorrow. Pick: North, 23-21.

West Catholic (5-2, 3-0) vs. Bishop McDevitt (6-1, 3-1), at Cheltenham, 7 tomorrow. Pick: West, 42-14.
