Rick O'Brien: A new season, and a fast start for Interboro

For Interboro, a perennial football power, it was a tumultuous start to the 2008 campaign. Steve Lennox's squad lost its first two games and had to try natural receiver Shawn Krautzel at quarterback.

The Bucs rebounded, winning seven of their next eight. They qualified for the PIAA District 1 Class AAA playoffs, losing to Pottsgrove in the first round, and finished with a 7-5 mark.

This year, Interboro is off to a 6-0 start and 2-0 in the Del-Val League, outscoring opponents by 185-51.

"We're making progress each week, and that's something every coach wants," said Lennox, now in his 17th season. "I also like our team chemistry and the fact that a lot of guys are contributing each game."

The Bucs play Penn Wood (4-2, 0-2) at home tonight at 7 in a Del-Val game postponed from Friday because of rain. "They're athletic, big and fast," Lennox said of Penn Wood. Interboro's catalysts on offense are slotback Joe Pfaff, halfback Charles Bolger and fullbacks Scott McNeil and Chris Long.

First-year quarterback Brett Creighton's top receiving targets are Pfaff, split end Rob Leone and tight end Joe O'Mara.

In addition to the 6-foot-1, 180-pound O'Mara, the offensive line is made up of left tackle Tom Motley (6-1, 215), left guard Casey Neal (6-1, 210), center Kevin Hinchey (6-0, 205), right guard Zach McMenamin (5-9, 195), and right tackle Felix Ortiz (6-1, 250).

The defense, yielding only 8.5 points per outing, is led by tackles McMenamin and Chris Goss, linebackers Pfaff and Paul Subers, and free safety Adam Smith.

"We're small, but we're quick and athletic," said Lennox, whose Bucs are seeking their 12th consecutive Del-Val crown. (They shared it with Glen Mills and Chester last season.)

Looking ahead, Interboro will host Glen Mills (4-3, 2-0) on Nov. 6.
