Rick O'Brien: A showdown of unbeatens in the Del-Val
The rugged Interboro Bucs, fresh off a 60-24 win over Oxford, have outscored foes by a combined 264-45. The surprising Academy Park Knights, who knocked off previously undefeated Penn Wood last week, have won by 116-52.
In Pioneer Athletic Conference action tonight, Upper Perkiomen tries to hand co-leader Owen J. Roberts its first defeat of the season.
The good news for the Indians is the return of two sophomores: wideout Ronnie Gillespie, who suffered a concussion two weeks ago at Pottstown, and linebacker Dalton Fleming, who went down with a neck injury in Week 3 versus Perkiomen Valley.
Last week: 6-4.
Overall: 49-14 (.778 winning percentage).
Council Rock South (4-1, 1-1) at No. 6 Abington (4-0, 2-0), 7 tonight. The Golden Hawks' only loss came against Pennsbury. The Ghosts are powered on offense by QB Sam Kind (55 for 86 passing, 750 yards, 7 TDs), tailback Julien Ireland (86 carries for 498 yards, 6 TDs) and wideout Anthony Hensley (28 catches for 419 yards, 4 TDs).
Pick: Abington, 27-14.
No. 7 Ridley (5-0, 4-0) at Conestoga (3-2, 3-1), 7 tonight. Good luck to the Pioneers in their bid to score points. The Green Raiders' defense has yielded only 2.6 points per game and posted three shutouts. Coach Dennis Decker's squad has won by a combined 177-13.
Pick: Ridley, 23-7.
Malvern Prep (2-2, 0-0) at Downingtown East (4-1, 2-0), 7 tonight. The young Friars are gradually making strides under rookie boss Kevin Pellegrini. They'll be tested against the Cougars' high-octane offense, led by junior QB Trey Lauletta and running back Drew Harris (107 carries for 532 yards, 10 TDs).
Pick: East, 30-21.
Interboro (5-0, 1-0) at Academy Park (5-0, 1-0), 7 tonight. The red-hot Knights are out to avenge last year's 40-0 defeat. That attempt will be led by QB Brian McDonald, wideout Kabongo Bukasa and running back Taron Mitchell. The Bucs' offense is sparked by multipurpose back Joe Pfaff.
Pick: Interboro, 26-17.
Upper Perkiomen (4-1, 2-1) at Owen J. Roberts (5-0, 3-0), 7 tonight. Can the Indians slow down electrifying running back Ryan Brumfield, who has rushed for 926 yards and 14 TDs? Well, they're hoping to fare better than Methacton. Brumfield burned the Warriors for 224 rushing yards and four TDs in a 55-0 romp last Saturday.
