Inqlings: Stormy weather at Fox29

Mixed news in one household.

Fox29 has not renewed the contract of weekend meteorologist David Aldrich. His last day after four years will be Oct. 2, a station rep said yesterday.

The outlook is better for his wife, Stephanie Aldrich, who is about to start as one of three hosts of First, a Delaware-focused news and info program on WHYY TV12 that premieres at 10 p.m. tomorrow.

David Aldrich, who did not return my messages, is a Wilmington native (as is another Fox29 weather exile, Rob Guarino). His work history includes a guest part on an episode of Matlock, a role as an extra in the movie Dead Poets Society, and a starring role in a Veterans' Life Insurance commercial with Roger Staubach.

Aldrich's departure will change the look of Fox29's weekend report, as reporter/weekend anchor John Atwater's last day will be Sunday.

No award for LaBelle

Wynnewood's Patti LaBelle is all over the invitations, but she won't be in New York today to receive an award at a mother-daughter fund-raiser for the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

LaBelle, Marie Savard, and Paula Zahn were selected to receive awards in a presentation by Cyndi Lauper. But during the last week, LaBelle bowed out, saying she had a scheduling conflict.

According to one story making the rounds, LaBelle canceled when she learned that her hair and makeup people would be unavailable. Her rep, Patti Webster, says that's not so. "It was a total miscommunication," she said, adding that the foundation had been corresponding with a former LaBelle employee. When flummoxed officials reached out to LaBelle's office, they learned that by this time, LaBelle was unavailable.

The Generation Award is to honor women for their work in communicating the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. No award will go to LaBelle.

Briefly noted

Philly apparently is not big enough for more than one full-time piano bar. The Piano Bar @ 20th and Arch announced its closing Tuesday - and in about a month, Jolly's Dueling Piano Bar is expected to open at 2006 Chestnut St. Owner Jolly Weldon says his waiters and bartenders need to be musically trained, all the better for impromptu sing-alongs.

Members of St. Joseph's women's basketball team will compete in a healthful-burger-making contest at Wynnewood's new Elevation Burger (50 E. Wynnewood Rd.) at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Proceeds from the day's sales will go to Main Line Health's new Women's Heart Health Initiative. The public can watch the hoopsters as they dribble . . . sauce.

Emmy news

Josh Goldblum of Philly's Bluecadet Interactive is sharing an Emmy for the documentary Hope: Living and Loving With HIV in Jamaica, which was awarded Monday in the category of new approaches to news and documentary programming: arts, lifestyle, and culture.

Actor Bryan Cranston won an Emmy on Sunday for his role in Breaking Bad, in which he plays a chemistry teacher who makes and deals in meth to help feed his family. Not to be confused with the Brian Cranston who teaches chemistry at Lenape High. The Barrington man's wife, Amy, says he's not planning to take on any moneymaking hobbies anytime soon.
