Joe Logan

Joe Logan covers golf for The Philadelphia Inquirer. In addition to writing his popular "Playing a Round" column most Sundays for the Inquirer's Golf Report, Logan travels the country and the world to follow the PGA, LPGA and Seniors Tours, as well as the top amateur circuit. A native of North Carolina, the award-winning reporter played competitive junior and small-college golf, before conceding that his future was at the keyboard rather than on the tour. He promptly transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he earned a degree in journalism. Prior to stumbling into his dream job in 1995, Logan spent almost two decades at the newspaper writing about topics as varied as presidential politics to movie stars. He is a frequent contributor to several national golf publications. Thanks largely to his job description, Logan manages to maintain a handicap of just under 5.

If there is one constant to the U.S. Open, it's that it is always played on great golf courses. Most years, those great courses also happen to be the bastions of privilege and privacy. Think Oakmont last year, Winged Foot the year before, Shinnecock in 2005, Merion in 2013.
Paula Creamer has labored in others’ shadows, but the rising young star is ready to take the next step.
HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. - With Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam casting the long shadows at this week's McDonald's LPGA Championship, even a rising star like Paula Creamer will be lucky to get much attention.
Of the four players at his Exelon Invitational in Lafayette Hill, his pick was K.J. Choi.
Next week when the focus of the golf world turns to the U.S. Open, most of the hype will be about a potential showdown between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
At Juniata Golf Club in North Philadelphia, which regulars joke was for years the city course that the city forgot, the back-from-the-brink-of-death story just keeps getting better.
DULUTH, Ga. - Charles Howell III shot a 5-under-par 67 yesterday to take a 1-stroke lead over Kenny Perry into the final round of the AT&T Classic.
Tiger Woods' recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery must be going well. It seems the No. 1 player in the world, who is notorious for rising early to practice, is back on his favorite schedule.
Local Golf Women's Golf Association TEAM MATCH PLAYOFFS Philadelphia Cup: Gulph Mills 1 def. *Radley Run 1, 51/2-11/2, at Aronimink.
DULUTH, Ga. - Jonathan Byrd took advantage of soft fairways and receptive greens at TPC Sugarloaf yesterday, shooting his second straight 6-under-par 66 to take a 3-stroke lead at 12-under 132 in the AT&T Classic.
CLIFTON, N.J. - Two days after announcing that this would be her final season on the LPGA Tour, Annika Sorenstam shot a 5-under-par 67 yesterday for a share of the first-round lead in the Sybase Classic.
Loraine Jones won 51/2 of a possible six points and led Merion Golf Club to the Philadelphia Cup in a playoff at the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia's Inter-Club Team Matches yesterday at Llanerch.
CLIFTON, N.J. - Blame Brett Favre. As a misty-eyed Annika Sorenstam announced yesterday why she had decided the time was right to reveal she would "step away" from competitive golf after this year, one of the all-time greats in golf recalled the recent retirements by one of the all-time greats in football, Favre.
