Drink
Made by the California Cider Co. in Sonoma County, this cider blends the juice of Gravenstein apples and pears before fermentation, and the result is crisp and refreshing, with a vivid orchard finish. It's a bit lighter than pure apple cider (not to mention most beers), and a shade drier than sweet fruit lambics like Lindemans, making it a great complement to food.
The bottled version has slightly more of a bubblegum aroma than the keg, but a growing number of restaurants are serving it on draft, including Jose Pistola's on 15th Street in Center City, the new Memphis Taproom on East Cumberland in Port Richmond, and National Mechanics on Third Street in Old City. Pint prices should range from $4 to $6. Ace Perry Cider is also widely available retail. Its regional distributor, Bella Vista Beer, at 738 S. 11th St. (215-627-6465), sells it for $29.95 a case.
