Ashley Fox: Eagles show some explosiveness

Ashley Fox blogged during the Eagles-Redskins game last night. Here's a sampling.

The ESPN Monday Night Countdown crew unanimously picked the Eagles over the Redskins tonight. Ditka. Keyshawn. Steve Young. Cris Carter. Tom Jackson. And a couple of ESPN talking heads.

Ditka is 6-0 picking the Monday night games.

First Quarter

DeSean Jackson can fly. He took an end around 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Big-play Jackson set an NFL record by opening the season with three consecutive games with touchdowns of at least 60 yards. His score tonight was the ninth of his career, and the sixth of at least 60 yards. That's why Jon Gruden said that Jackson has had "more explosive plays than anybody in NFL history."

That might be hyperbole, but that's the type of hype that Jackson is getting now.

Brian Westbrook got kneed in the head by London Fletcher. He has a concussion and won't return.

It's a shame for No. 36. He has been craving more carries, and it looked like Andy Reid was going to lean on him tonight. He got the first two carries of the game. He left the game after his third.

Second Quarter

Welcome to Philly, Will Witherspoon. Everyone loves you. Until they hate you. But this being a time of unprecedented success, we'll focus on the love. For now.

Witherspoon, for six days an Eagle, scored a touchdown to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead. Quintin Mikell blitzed up the middle and tipped Jason Campbell's pass at the line. The ball fell into Witherspoon's hands, and he jogged 9 yards into the end zone. Then, at the start of the second quarter, Witherspoon stripped Campbell from behind. Mikell recovered.

What a journey for 'spoon. After two big plays, you have to wonder why the Rams let him go?

When things go bad, they go bad. Antwaan Randle El muffed a punt to quiet the crowd, which had come alive after a Campbell touchdown pass to pull within 17-7. The ball hit Randle El in the face mask, the Eagles recovered, and they ended up with a field goal to go ahead, 20-7.

If the Birds learned anything last week it's that you can't give a bad team life. Confidence can be elusive, but once a team finds it, the results can be shocking. Just look at the Raiders.

Seventeen times this season, the Eagles had faced third and at least 10 yards and been unable to convert. Until now. It was another bomb to Jackson.

McNabb pump-faked while Jackson put a double move on Redskins safety Chris Horton and launched a beautiful pass to Jackson for a 57-yard touchdown. It was the 200th touchdown pass of McNabb's career and put him over the 30,000-passing-yards mark. He's the 28th quarterback in NFL history with that many TD passes and the 30th with that many yards.

And it must be said: McNabb had all day to throw the ball. It was good protection from a line that has been reshuffled because of so many injuries.

Third Quarter

With all the issues the Redskins have, they didn't need to lose one of their biggest weapons. They miss tight end Chris Cooley, who left the game earlier with an injury. Fred Davis, a second-year guy out of USC, isn't Cooley. And aren't the Eagles happy about that?

Fourth Quarter

So the Eagles will move to 4-2, 1-0 in the NFC East. Not to discount this win, but the Eagles will have a tougher task Sunday when they host the 5-2 Giants.

Andy Reid has done a good job over the years piecing together successful teams down the stretch, despite injuries. They have issues on the offensive line, in the middle of the D, and possibly at running back. Still, with an offense this explosive, he'll have a shot at doing it again.

Yeah, I'm not sure what game she was watching. "McNabb had all day to throw?" Looked to me that he was hurried most of the game. Truth is, except for w big plays, the Eagles stunk up the joint, just not as bad as the Redskins. The run game was non-existent. If they play that way next Sunday, it'll be a blowout for the Giants.

Explosive means they can play with anybody in the league. But it won't make them 12-4 or get a Super Bowl win. They're exposed this year as a team that can't sustain drives. Next year, with a good O-line, could be good.
