Relive the memories: Coverage of the World Series run

Bob Ford: It's not over yet, but it's pretty close

Well, it's been nice.

The Phillies, as you know and have witnessed and been told endlessly, are a resilient team. They are never finished until it is finished, are never out of it until it is over. They battle, they scrap, they come back when there is very little hope of coming back.

All of that is still true as the sun comes up on this morning of the fifth game of the 2009 World Series. The Phillies are not going to go gently into the good South Philadelphia night this evening, just as they won't go gently into the harsh chill of the Bronx should the Series be extended beyond tonight. That isn't the way they play.

But, well, it's been nice.

Even the late heroics of Pedro Feliz, who tied the game last night with a solo home run when the Phillies were down to their final four outs, couldn't turn the tide of a night that eventually washed over them by a 7-4 score.

They had one comeback in them, but hardly enough to offset a two-out meltdown by Brad Lidge in the top of the ninth. It is either ironic or maddening, or baseball's cruel sense of justice, that a season which has teetered on the brink at times, at least partly because of Lidge, fell irrevocably close to the abyss because of him.

"I think we take pride on the way we bounce back, and I know we'll play [Game 5] to win," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I've seen us go through it before. We've blown something like 22 leads after the seventh inning this year. That should tell you something about the resilience of the team."

Lidge's disappointment will be remembered by fans long after they have forgotten that it has been the Phillies' prolific offense that let them down the most. The Phils have had the misfortune to go cold and untimely at the plate after winning the opener against the Yankees. They scored a total of 10 runs in the three losses that have followed.

With the exception of Cole Hamels, the starting pitching has been good enough in the Series - good enough, in fact, to have provided them the three-games-to-one lead rather than forcing them to stare uphill at it.

In last night's matchup of Country Joe and the Flesh, Joe Blanton of the Phillies got them through the sixth inning and gave up four runs. That's about what is expected of him. CC Sabathia of the Yankees pitched himself into trouble and the Phils consistently let him out. They hit 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and committed their greatest sin when the first two batters got aboard in the fifth inning and the next three batters - Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth - failed to get the ball out of the infield.

Baseball does not reward such oversights. The Phils have not been able to put together big innings, their stock in trade, scoring more than one run in an inning just three times so far in the four games of the Series, and only once in the three losses. Half of their production last night came on solo home runs - one by Feliz and one by Utley - and there is some fitting irony in that as well. All seven of their homers in this series have been with the bases empty, meaning that the Yankees challenge them when the odds are best and pitch them more carefully when they are not.

It is the way to play baseball, and New York, like it or not, has to be grudgingly applauded for that. The Phillies failed at the worst times and they find themselves in a very difficult place now.

The World Series isn't over, but only two teams out of 22 that have been in this situation have been able to come back and become champions. Do the Phillies have that capability in them? Of course they do, but whether they would also be given the good fortune necessary to get it done is unlikely.

It has been nice. That's not a criticism, just a reminder. They can force the Series back to New York with a Cliff Lee win tonight. That might be the easiest part of the mission that is ahead.

They would return to Yankee Stadium needing to pitch Pedro Martinez in Game 6 and Hamels in Game 7, or Martinez and then J.A. Happ. Or J.A. Happ and then All Hands On Deck. In any case, the odds aren't good. In fact, they are very bad.

It's been nice and the quality of this team is not diminished because this season probably won't end in a party. You just have to remember that the party has lasted two years and that's pretty good.

"This was tough, because it's the World Series," Manuel said. "We're down, but we're still breathing."

That part is nice, too, for now.

Yeah, this one is tough. Mainly because the Yanks go about building a team by spending ridiculous money and do nothing but win consistently. However this is a fantastic team that will continue to be in the mix for several years to come. Now let's go out and win a couple more....

You can't keep ignoring the lack of performance Howard and Ibanez have shown. They aren't even mediocre at best. The K's tell the story. An immature pitcher who seems to resent being dropped from his #1 status, isn't helping either.

Lidge had no business pitching in the 9th inning. It was not a close situation, and even if it was, he probably still should not have been in there. And even if he did, he should have been pulled after hitting t Mark Teixeira. More bumbling managing, by the king of incompetence himself. Good ole boy Cholly does it again. In a short series like this, the idiocy of Manuel is exposed. Clueless.

Poor at bats are killing us. Ibanez, Howard, Werth (Last night)...Guys take the stinking off speed pitches up the middle or to left field. You are in the world series and odds are will never get back, do something memorable.

The layoff and lack of work by the bullpen from the end of the NLCS through the end of game 3 is what hurt the Phillies the most. The bullpen looks rusty. When you haven't pitched in a game for 11 days, ESPECIALLY when you're a closer, you're at a huge disadvantage. This was evidenced also in game 3 when the bullpen came in and leaked runs over the last few innings. They were rusty. The hitters (other than Utley) also look very undisciplined at the plate, Rollins and Victorino hacking at everything. Howard seems to have no idea what is coming and Ibanez just looks old. If this thing gets to game 6 against Pettite, they have got to move Werth to 4th in the order, drop HOward to 6th and maybe swap Ruiz & Ibanez. The lefties in the order have to be broken up because against lefty pitchers they are getting outs in bunches.

jingles - people like you shouldn't even be posting. You're the loser who celebrates after a win and acts like a diegard, but when things aren;t going smooth you cry like a little baby. This team won the world series in 2008, remember? They are playing right now in 2009. Have mistakes been made - you bet! It's life, you moron. Guess what? These guys are human!GO PHILLIES!!!!

I've never been able to figure out why good ole Charley bats Utley and Howard in tandem; nespecially against tough lefties. Why not insert Werth between them. Maybe even flip-flop Ibanez and Feliz. that would make it tougher on the opponent to make late innoing righty/lefty switches and get more consistency out of the middle of the order.

Time to start whining about how much money the Yanks spend. Get over it. Time to tip your caps to the better team. By the way, maybe you should wait past the first inning to chant CC s__ks. It makes you look stupid as he mows your team down.

I live on L.I. New York & have been a NY Yankee fan since birth. I take pride in my team win or lose. I looked at your articles today regarding game 5 & was appalled. Personally after reading your doom & gloom & I was a Philly I'd jump off a bridge & end it now. I expect the Yankees to win but please don't just roll over & play dead. A Yankee win would lose it's shine if that happens.

Dear fuss77--- Do you know how sick I am about hearing about how much $$ the Yankees spend on players? It seems to me that the Phillies have plenty to spend too.Remember no World Series Champ since 2009. Money isn't everything. The difference is that George S. is a fan & wants to see his team win--You know--the tradition & the legacy. If money was so important, the name on our doors wouldn't be Yankee Stadium but some million dollar corporate name...Sound familiar?

I'm tired of hearing how the Philly bullpen is short of rest , Hey! Philly finished up the dodgers a week before The Yankees! I'm tired of hearing how Philly fans don't like the "overspending of The Yankees". The truth is that Philly cant blamed Brad Lidge alone, every one is at fault. Brad Lidge cant go and bat for Ryan Howard or our good friend no good Jimmy Rollins. The truth is that The New York Yankees have played inspired baseball and outplayed The Phillies the last 3 games. Who said Phillies in five? Oh yeah Mr Rollins, hehehehehe! Yankees win, Theeeeeeeeee Yankees win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

When you talk about disappearing bats, don't forget Victorino. I had to double check because I wasn't sure he was even on the series roster since he's been MIA in the lineup. Fact is, one team has to win and one team has to lose and Yankees are out piching and outplaying the Phils right now. Unfortunately here in Philly fans want to blame someone or whine about the Yankees payroll or point the finger at Charlie or blame the media. If they lose they lose so be it. It's a game. There's a reason why the Yankees won 130 games. They're good.

The fact that Cole Hamels was even in the rotation after the pathetic postseason and last 2 months of the season he's had, is just baffling. I don't know why you don't use the 3 man rotation, like the Yankees did, it seems to work for them. If Cliff doesn't want to go on 3 days, then put Blanton in Game 4, he wasn't terrible. Cole was terrible. That game 3 should've been JA Happ. What about Kyle Kendrick? These guys can pitch, and they give us a shot at winning.
