Fri. N.J. roundup: Millville upsets Clearview in boys’ soccer

Millville goalie Mike Cirroco stopped one shot in the best-of-five penalty-kick tiebreaker, giving the Thunderbolts the edge for an upset victory at top-seeded Clearview Friday in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 boys' soccer tournament.

The teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime as host Clearview's (16-1-3) Brandon DeAngelo scored on an 18-yard shot in the first half, and eighth-seeded Millville (11-7-1) answered with Zach Kranefield's rebound goal with 10 minutes left in the second half.

In the postgame shoot-out, Scott Price, Mike Riggins, Mitch Grotti and Marco Grotti had successful penalty kicks for the Thunderbolts, who will play at Lenape in Tuesday's semifinals.

Also in Group 4, Lenape avenged two regular-season losses to Cherry Hill East by beating the visiting Cougars, 2-0. John Brawner and Rocco Gambino scored the goals, and Indians goalie Taylor Edwards made five saves.

Toms River South's John Nagiewich scored on a rebound with just 26 seconds left in the second half to end visiting Cherry Hill West's season with a 1-0 loss. West goalie Andrew Rinaldi had seven saves.

South Jersey Group 3. Burlington Township, seeded No. 13, stayed alive with a 2-1 thriller at Cumberland in which goalie Mike Dipaola came up with nine saves, and Christian Montemore assisted Brendan Stringfellow's goal and scored the game-winner.

South Jersey Group 2. Haddon Township avenged a regular-season loss to Haddon Heights by eliminating the visiting Garnets, 1-0. Jay Casey scored the goal unassisted on a rebound with 1 minute, 22 seconds left in the second half.

Top-seeded Woodstown, which will face Haddon Township in the semifinals, slipped past visiting Barnegat, 1-0, when Drew Geiger knocked in a goal with four minutes left in the first half from 10 yards out. Wolverines goalie Alex Zeidler notched five saves for his 11th shutout.

Despite being a player short for the last 20 minutes of regulation and all of overtime after a red card, Buena got past visiting Haddonfield with a 4-1 edge in the penalty-kick shoot-out.

Chiefs goalie Tyler Callahan made 14 saves in the scoreless tie, while Jose Rodriguez, Brandon Brown, Stevan Austino and Divid Silipino connected on penalty kicks in the tiebreaker.

West Deptford has nine goals in two playoff games after defeating visiting Sterling, 5-1. Ryan Kelly scored twice and assisted on a goal, and Jim Powers, Josh Jackson and Jake Perry added a goal each.

South Jersey Group 1. After playing to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime, Pitman used a 3-1 edge in postgame penalty kicks to oust visiting Pennsville.

Josh Pacana, Eric Todd and Dewey Pfeiffer converted the penalty kicks for the Panthers, who dropped a 2-0 regular-season match to Pennsville. Pitman goalie Steve Schuler guarded the net.

Penns Grove also needed a penalty-kick shoot-out to beat host Riverside after a scoreless matchup.

Successful kicks by Brett Lockbaum, Mano Massari, Andy Oliver and Tyler Stewart gave the 12th-seeded Red Devils a 4-2 advantage and an upset of the fourth-seeded Rams.

Kyle Lammerding put New Egypt into the next round by scoring three minutes into overtime, beating visiting Gateway, 2-1. After Gateway's John Tedrick and the Warriors' Pat Seiler traded regulation goals, John Parin's cross set up Lammerding's header into the upper corner of the net.

Central Jersey Group 4. Bobby Spracklin broke a 1-1 deadlock by heading in the winning goal off a crossing pass by Hoffman King with six minutes to play, making Rancocas Valley a 2-1 winner over visiting Freehold Township. Kyle Teschko notched the Red Devils' first goal for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Central Jersey Group 2. Willingboro got a goal from Hamilton Klar, but the Chimeras' season ended with a 9-1 quarterfinal loss at top-seeded Raritan.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Ryan McFadden scored twice, and Christian Gill and Dominick Pernice had a goal apiece as top-seeded St. Augustine bolted to a 3-0 lead and cruised past visiting St. John Vianney, 4-2.

Jim Spilker scored a goal in each half, and Bishop Eustace returned from Monsignor Donovan with a 2-1 triumph. Crusaders goalie Tyler Miller chalked up 10 saves.
