Neumann-Gorettis Jones picks Hartford
Neumann-Goretti senior Mustafaa Jones has given an oral commitment to play men's basketball at the University of Hartford.
The 5-foot-11 guard chose the American East Conference school over Hampton, New Hampshire, Columbia and Brown Wednesday night. Jones will be able to sign a binding national letter of intent during the Nov. 11-18 early-signing period.
"I took an unofficial visit Sunday and I just felt comfortable there," Jones said of Hartford, which is about a four-hour drive from Philadelphia. "It's close to home, but not too close to home."
Jones, who carries a 3.7 grade-point average while taking advance-placement courses, was also impressed with Hartford's small-college setting.
"Most classes have about 20 to 30 kids," he said, "and it's still a good conference for basketball."
Jones averaged seven points and six assists last season for the Saints.
He becomes the fourth Neumann-Goretti senior to secure a basketball scholarship. Guard Tony Chennault gave an oral commitment to Wake Forest last year. Forward Daniel Stewart accepted a scholarship from Rider on Oct. 23. Point guard Tyreek Duren gave a commitment to La Salle Monday.
