Clayton girls win soccer thriller
Freshman Maxie New's goal in the second round of sudden-death penalty kicks, coupled with stellar goaltending by senior Valarie Perretti, enabled second-seeded Clayton to slip past No. 7 seed Gateway Thursday in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 girls' soccer tournament.
Perretti recorded her 49th career shutout as the teams battled to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime periods.
After the first round of penalty kicks ended in a 3-3 deadlock, both teams misfired to open the second round of PKs. Each side converted on the second attempt, but Perretti stopped Gateway's third shot to set the stage for New's game-winner and a 5-4 final margin.
The Clippers (17-4) will host 11th-seeded Maple Shade in a semifinal on Monday.
The Wildcats (10-9-2) pulled off a 2-0 upset at third-seeded Pitman, thanks to a pair of goals from Alyssa Pacheco.
Sophomore Mariah Davis stole the ball and dribbled 80 yards before netting her first career goal, as fifth-seeded Schalick (11-6-1) upended No. 4 seed Riverside, 2-0.
South Jersey Group 4. Madison Tiernan took a pass from Kaelyn Pizaro with 2 minutes left in the second overtime, and the freshman chipped a shot over the goalie's head from 25 yards out to make sixth-seeded Eastern a 1-0 winner at No. 3 seed Williamstown. Deana Wood (eight saves) went the distance in goal for the Vikings (15-5), who will head to second-seeded Shawnee for a semifinal on Monday.
Six players figured in the scoring for the Renegades (18-3-1), who used a pair of second-half goals to finish off 10th-seeded Triton, 3-0.
Miranda Donnian and Gina Thomas scored, with assists from Kelly Hardesty and Missy Trafton, and Lauren West stopped seven shots to carry fourth-seeded Clearview past No. 5 seed Mainland, 2-0.
South Jersey Group 2. Julie Brockway and Gianna Hickey broke through for goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, putting third-seeded West Deptford on track for a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed Audubon. The Eagles (16-4-1) will take on another Colonial Conference rival - second-seeded Haddonfield (19-1-1) - in the semifinals on Monday.
Katie Johnston totaled two goals and an assist and Jenna Gosnay set up a pair of scores to key Haddonfield's 3-0 decision over 10th-seeded Woodstown.
The other semifinal will pit top-seeded Haddon Township against No. 4 seed Haddon Heights.
Township (18-2-1) rode two goals from Jess Brown, two assists from Carly Francis and Katie Getzinger's 16th shutout to a 4-0 defeat of ninth-seeded GCIT.
Senior co-captain Sam Brodsky put in a rebound from close range with 8 minutes left in the second half to lift Heights (14-4-1) over fifth-seeded Middle Township, 1-0.
South Jersey Group 3. Rachel Viscusi's direct free kick from 20 yards out dipped below the crossbar with 4 minutes to go, allowing seventh-seeded Highland to hold off No. 15 seed Timber Creek, 3-2.
Melissa Blevins had the other two goals for the Tartans (14-7), including a breakaway late in the first half and a give-and-go from Darshana Parikh just after intermission. The Chargers made it interesting with second-half goals from Kelly Farrell and Olivia McEachern.
Kathleen Wolf buried a direct free kick from the top of the box with 3 minutes left, and Erika McCool was perfect in the nets to send fourth-seeded Moorestown past No. 5 seed Hammonton, 1-0. The Quakers (11-4-3) will travel to play a semifinal at top-seeded Point Pleasant Boro on Monday.
Taylor Donahue converted Katie O'Keefe's pass to give ninth-seeded Seneca (9-8-1) the lead in the 14th minute, but Point Pleasant Boro battled back to take a 2-1 triumph on Carly Snyder's score with 8 minutes to go in regulation.
South Jersey Non-Public B. Leah Braidi picked apart the defense of sixth-seeded Timothy Christian for four goals and one assist, and No. 3 seed Sacred Heart used a strong second-half effort to put away the quarterfinal match, 6-2. Amanda Buirch chipped in a goal and an assist for the Lions (13-3-1), who will head to Holy Cross for a semifinal on Monday.
The second-seeded Lancers (14-3-2) advanced with a 3-1 triumph over the No. 7 seed, Our Lady of Mercy, behind two goals and an assist from Clare MacAdams.
Top-seeded Gloucester Catholic (15-1-1) received two goals from Chelsea Duffy in eliminating ninth-seeded St. Joseph, 5-0. Rams' keeper Jacki Wajda faced just one shot on goal.
South Jersey Non-Public A. Brittany Ratcliffe produced a goal and two assists in leading top-seeded Paul VI past No. 8 seed St. John Vianney, 3-0. Sarah Hinkle made four saves in posting the shutout for the Eagles (19-1), who set a school single-season record for wins.
Holy Spirit goalie Courtney Budd turned aside 16 shots, but the fifth-seeded Spartans (10-5-3) didn't have enough firepower to keep No. 4 seed Notre Dame from taking a 4-1 win.
Seventh-seeded Bishop Eustace (7-9) saw its playoff run come to an end in a 5-0 loss at No. 2 seed Red Bank Catholic.
Central Jersey Group 2. Sophomore Taylor Lewis scored twice, boosting her career total to 57 goals, but top-seeded Willingboro couldn't generate any other offense in suffering a 4-2 quarterfinal loss to No. 8 seed Governor Livingston. Janae Tucker stopped eight shots for the Chimeras (14-4-1), who couldn't overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit.
Second-seeded Cinnaminson used a balanced attack and shutout goaltending by Vicky Cocozza to oust No. 7 seed Delaware Valley, 7-0. Becky Forcellini, Christine Gannon, Shannon Quinn and Danielle Zenkowich scored for the Pirates (14-4-1).
Central Jersey Group 4. Rancocas Valley goalie Michelle Snow came through with 10 saves, but the 10th-seeded Red Devils (11-6-1) managed just two shots on goal in falling, 2-0, at No. 2 seed East Brunswick.
Field Hockey
Colleen McCormack and Kelsey Spigel each had a goal, with Tara Dunning and Taylor King supplying assists, as fourth-seeded Lenape held off No. 5 seed Howell, 2-1, in a NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 quarterfinal.
Denise Thompson lost her shutout bid in the final minute of regulation, but finished with seven saves in posting the win. The Indians (10-6-3) will face No. 9 seed Steinert tomorrow in a semifinal being played at Shawnee.
South Jersey Group 4. Courtney Branco's four goals and two assists highlighted an offensive onslaught by second-seeded Clearview in a 10-1 quarterfinal romp past No. 7 seed Mainland.
Krysta Aliberti also scored four times while Gabby D'Amico contributed two goals and an assist for the Pioneers (18-3), who will host No. 3 seed Eastern (20-2) in a sectional semifinal tomorrow morning.
Eighth-seeded Egg Harbor Township (8-7-1) bowed out, 2-1, at top-seeded Southern Regional. By virtue of its 2-1 triumph over No. 4 seed Shawnee, fifth-seeded Washington Township earned a trip to Southern Regional for Saturday's semifinal.

Ryan Butler's goal with 12 minutes left lifted Palmyra over Schalick, 3-2, in a South Jersey Group 1 quarterfinal.
