Maria's golden goal lifts Cherry Hill West

Williamstown coach Dave Geyer wasn't sure of his name.

But he liked his game.

"That No. 7, I like the way he plays soccer," Geyer said of Cherry Hill West's Luan Maria. "He's a big, physical force in there."

Maria, a senior striker, scored two goals and assisted on another as Cherry Hill West defeated Williamstown, 3-2, in overtime Tuesday in the first round of the South Jersey Group 4 tournament.

Maria scored a golden goal with a little less than two minutes to play in the first overtime.

"I was just in the right place," Maria said. "I turned and got the shot off, and it went in the net."

Third-seeded Cherry Hill West (15-3-1) advances to Friday's quarterfinals.

Williamstown (9-9-0), the 14th seed, got two goals from midfielder Zaiere Putmon in the final game of his career.

"He really didn't get the chance to show what kind of player he is this year because of injuries," Geyer said. "But he showed what he could do today."

Putmon's header off a nice feed from Mike Altbaum tied the score at 2-2 with just 47 seconds remaining in regulation time.

Cherry Hill West struck in overtime as Evan Taylor passed to Maria in the box and the forward turned in traffic and blasted a shot into the net.

"It says something about the character of our team," Cherry Hill West coach Dan Butler said. "We gave up that late goal, and a lot of teams would have gone into a shell. But our guys kept battling."

Butler said Maria emerged as a scoring threat late in the season.

"He's got a knack for scoring," the coach said.

Williamstown focused its defensive attention on Trevor Sharpe, perhaps South Jersey's most dangerous striker. Marking back Josh Evans shadowed Sharpe, with help from sweeper Shawn Bove.

But that created openings for other Cherry Hill West players, and Maria took advantage.

"He did a great job of finding his opportunities," Geyer said.
