Delsea blanks Buena in field hockey quarterfinal
Junior center back Jessie Coffin sized up Buena's goalie from the penalty stroke line, stretched her left foot in back of her for a few seconds, closed, and fired high.
The ball flew beyond goalie Christina Bashenko's left shoulder into the cage, and Delsea had its first goal Tuesday in a South Jersey Group 2 field hockey quarterfinal clash with visiting Buena.
Delsea's Brittany Carney, Brooke Phillips and Ashli Nieves followed suit in the first half, and Arielle Visalle scored after intermission as the Crusaders rolled to a 5-0 victory.
On Friday, No. 3 seed Delsea (18-1) is scheduled to play Holy Spirit, a 9-3 winner Tuesday over Barnegat. Holy Spirit is the No. 2 seed.
Buena coach Barbara Meyrick and Delsea coach Meg Unger credited Coffin's goal with changing the momentum of a game that had been scoreless until 14 minutes, 50 seconds remained in the first half. The stroke was awarded when a defensive player kicked the ball, which would have gone into the cage.
"I psych myself out before I do a stroke," Coffin said about her tai-chi-like stance. "I've had four strokes, and I'm four for four. I stretch, I set, I hold, and then I stroke.
"That's what we needed. We needed a quick goal."
In exhibiting a balanced scoring attack, the Crusaders outshot sixth seeded Buena, 26-4.
"We kept up the momentum and intensity, and once we score, we can't stop," said Visalle, who scored the final goal 3:43 into the second half.
Buena (12-7) had nine penalty corners to Delsea's 10; however, the Crusaders' senior left back, Caitlin Baker, flew to the ball so fast after the inserts that she continually disrupted set plays designed to score.
"They always went to the same girl, number 31," Baker said about junior forward Karlie Gruccio. "If you don't have any other girl to take shots, it definitely is going to upset them, and it did."
Gruccio led the Chiefs in scoring this season with 28 goals.
Unger had seen Buena play a week earlier and told Baker, the fastest runner on the team, to be prepared for Gruccio to get the ball on corners.
Baker was ready, and so were the rest of the Crusaders.
