Celtics bury the Sixers with treys

Tonight at the Wachovia Center, the Boston Celtics shot three-pointers as efficiently as free throws, the 76ers as inefficiently as halfcourt heaves.

Other on-court differences - Boston had far superior bench play, rebounding, and defense - contributed to a 105-74 Celtics rout, but none seemed as obvious as the Sixers' shooting from beyond the arc.

They made 1 of 16 shots. Boston made 14 of 20 three-pointers.

No one was more effective for the Celtics from long range than big man Rasheed Wallace, who capped most of his six three-pointers with a raised fist, then a quick pump of the elbow. Wallace finished with 20 points, second on the team to Paul Pierce's 21.

Swingman Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 17 points. The only other Sixer in double figures was forward Thaddeus Young, who scored 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

For the night, Boston's bench outscored the Sixers, 62-24. The Celtics outrebounded them, 39-34; and limited the Sixers to 36.2 percent shooting from the floor.

The Sixers dropped to 2-2; the Celtics improved to 5-0.

Nothing more accurately represented the game's first quarter than Young's errant three-point try, which grazed the left side of the rim midway through the period and inspired groans from the Wachovia Center crowd.

Folks weren't so much reacting solely to Young's miss, but to the game's collection of misses: With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Sixers and Celtics had combined to make just 5 of 16 shots.

The Sixers struggled to put the ball in the basket, clanging drives and thudding long-range looks, but the Celtics matched them miss for miss.

With a couple of minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Sixers were ahead, 15-10. Then the Celtics made 6 of 7, including three from beyond the arc. The Sixers made 1 of 7, including none from beyond the arc.

The momentum shifted as Boston went ahead, 25-17.

The Sixers spent the entire second quarter trying to catch up and failed to do so. They went to the locker room trailing by 44-36.

The difference in the first half was from the three-point line. The Sixers were 0 for 7, the Celtics 5 for 8.

Wallace, the Celtics' off-the-bench weapon, made 3 of 4 three-pointers and was the game's leading scorer at the half with 11 points. The last of Wallace's trio of treys, when he rolled to the right wing off a pick-and-roll, gave the Celtics a 31-21 lead with 7:45 left in the half. After the ball rolled through the hoop, Wallace gave a small fist pump.

Wallace was the game's only double-figure scorer at halftime. Young led the Sixers with eight points on 3-for-10 shooting.

The Celtics made their first four shots of the second half, the Sixers missed their first three, and Boston's lead ballooned from eight points to 15.

Sixers played without any passion, as if they KNEW they couldn't win from the first tip. Sixers never quit under last 2 coaches...they quit before they began in the 5th game of the season. Brutal.

The NBA is not rocket science. Teams without a top 5-6 player are just filler. Sure some of the better ones may win 48 or so games, but so what? The NBA has a huge problem, only a handful of teams have any shot at winning, the rest of the league has tons of empty seats.

Brutal; not sure how long Donyell Marshall (who is great) will be a pre- and post-game commentator on Comcast, as he buried them tonight, justifiably so. No motion, no ball movement, too much one-on-one, awful both offensively and defensively beyond the arc (as seen with the games against the Magic [48-21], Knicks [42-9] and tonight [27-3]. Reminded fans that the Sixers are not really that young, given the number of years such players as Brand, Iguodala, Williams (as well as Dalembert,Kapono, and Green) have been in the league. Called the Sixers a .500 team (he actually hesitated before saying even that). Yet, Sixers will beat the Nets on Friday night; would be nice not to be blown out by quality teams like the Magic and Celtics.

Good thing Kapono was partying at McFadden's last night at 2AM after the Phils win.

11,000 for a Boston Celtics game. Philadelphia should be embarrassed. These ignoramus fans expect a title in every sport every year and that is unrealistic. A good sports town would support a team with some intriguing young talent like Eddie Stefanski's boys have.

Jeff: in case you did not realize it, we are in the midst of a brutal recession and, on top of that, a public transport strike. Given the cost of tickets for all teams, whether we like it or not, people pick and choose and they generally choose winners and quality entertainment. Apparently, they realized that the Sixers, as we saw tonight, had little chance against the Celtics, whose smothering defense wins games, but does not provide exciting basketball, particularly against a team with no outside game right now. To call them ignoramus fans is rather harsh. Perhaps discriminating fans.

I've loved the Sixers since '79 and really like the current core of AI, Young, Speights, and Lou. But I don't have much hope for them. Brand was useless last night. Sammy was typical Sammy (good def for a little bit, an offensive spark, then wildly inconsistent and frustrating to watch). I don't have the answer. I think they may have digressed. I wish they hadn't invested in Brand and instead could make a run for Bosh next year . . .

OK, so us Philly fans have been watching this Samuel Dalembert act for 6 years now. 95% of the fans in Philly (I don't think I'm exaggerating at all here) KNOW FOR A FACT that SAM DALEMBERT DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL. However, 55 year old lifelong "basketball man" Eddie Jordan doesn't seem to understand this. It's absolutely infuriating. Anyone who doesn't see that Sam Dalembert does not know how to play basketball after 6 YEARS, 6 FREAKIN 6 YEARS is incompetant. Please, please, I beg you, stop putting Sam Dalembert out there to embarass himself and the city of Philadephia. He was done 4 years ago but "lifelong basketball man" Eddie Jordan is just too mind numbingly stupid to see this. We all can see it, why can't he? Absolutely pathetic.
