Fri. N.J. roundup: Mainland advances in field hockey

Switching positions due to injury, senior Ashlyn Cook made a flawless transition from midfield to right wing and scored her first three goals of the season, helping seventh-seeded Mainland outlast 10th-seeded Williamstown, 6-4, Friday in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 field hockey tournament.

Kassie Barrett scored twice to give her a team-leading 15 goals on the season, and Mustangs netminder Mimi Ojsekis made several highlight-reel stops in finishing with 15 saves. The Braves never led, despite a four-goal performance by Justine Mattia.

Ang Canale scored twice in the second half as fourth-seeded Shawnee pulled away from No. 13 seed Oakcrest, 5-0. Emily Arnot, Victoria Radwell and Nicole Troost also scored for the Renegades.

Lisa Patrone and Lindsay Hatch combined for four goals and six assists in fifth-seeded Washington Township's 9-0 rout of No. 12 seed Atlantic City. Laura Rose added a pair of goals for the Minutemaids. Atlantic City goalie Nikki Djambinov had 31 saves.

Jenny Carpenter knocked in a pass from Shayna Weber with 5 minutes, 17 seconds left in overtime, giving No. 11 seed Absegami a 1-0 upset at sixth-seeded Triton.Braves goalie Michele McCann made 11 saves to earn the shutout.

Steph Rivera, Casey McNellis and Katie Champion scored for No. 8 seed Egg Harbor Township in a 3-1 home win over ninth-seeded Millville.

Central Jersey Group 1. Second-seeded Florence rode Lexi Smith's hat trick to a 5-1 triumph over No. 7 seed Riverside in a quarterfinal match.

Cape-Atlantic. Colleen Slaughter established a school record by scoring twice, boosting her career total to 81 goals, to highlight Ocean City's 7-0 rout of visiting Hammonton. The previous mark of 80 was set by Jenee Doto in 1999. Slaughter has 40 goals this season - one shy of Abby Wooley's single-season record (41 in 1997).

Lindsay Obermeier's second goal of the game, just moments into overtime, lifted Lower Cape May over Buena, 3-2, and gave the Tigers the National Conference Division I crown.

Boys' Soccer

Cherokee won the opportunity to play top-seeded Clearview in Tuesday's NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 tourney by beating host Oakcrest, 1-0, in a play-in game.

Ryan Lynch scored a goal from Joe Presser off a scramble in front of the net in the first half, and Barry Fitzgerald and Andrew Dahl shared the shutout in the Chiefs' goal with seven combined saves.

Colonial. Gateway's Lucas Grigri and Audubon's Jim O'Donnell traded goals in a 1-1 tie at Gateway. O'Donnell tied the game nine minutes into the second half.

Burlington County. Single goals by Ryan Hoffecker, Sean O'Conner and Jon Petitte carried Palmyra past host Maple Shade, 3-1.

Tri-County. Eddie Mahoney's two goals helped Salem outlast visiting Woodstown, 3-2, in overtime.

Pitman wrapped up a 10-0 Classic Division schedule with a 3-1 triumph at Schalick. Matt Barton, Andrew Pfieffer and Eric Todd contributed the goals.

Cape-Atlantic. Unbeaten St. Augustine (18-0) knocked off visiting Hammonton, 5-2, highlighted by Connor Hurff's hat trick.

Nonleague. Rob Schlitt's cross set up Alex Johnston for the winning goal with three minutes left in the second overtime, wrapping up Haddonfield's 3-2 success against visiting Willingboro.

Cross-Country

Cherry Hill East had five runners among the first 10 finishers, including a fourth-place effort by Damon Glatz, and won the boys' team title at the Camden County Championships at Gloucester County College.

Triton's Rob Rawls won the boys' race in 16 minutes, 5 seconds, and Highland's Megan Venables (18:03) won the girls' race by a margin of 1:11.
