Wilson rallies again, beats New Egypt

Maybe Woodrow Wilson coach Chris Crowley should begin each practice by showing his players a video tape of their final scoring drive against New Egypt in a come-from-behind win at home Saturday afternoon.

It was inspirational.

Wilson trailed by three points with the ball at its own 4-yard line and 5 minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the game when sophomore quarterback Aaron Spencer engineered a 15-play touchdown drive. Spencer carried the ball the last two yards himself.

Spencer's conversion pass failed, but the Tigers had their first lead of the game, 22-19, with 1:40 left and their defense held on. Wilson finished the job by dropping New Egypt ball-carrier Jamel Smith for a five-yard loss on a fourth-and-two with 52 seconds left.

The Warriors' Smith carried the ball 23 times for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The Tigers are 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot Division.

New Egypt dropped to 2-3 and is 1-3 in the Freedom Division.

Both teams are shooting for a playoff spot.

"We always practice to not give up," Spencer said. "Last week we were down and we knew we could come back."

The previous week sophomore running back Anthony Haynes scored in the final 12 seconds to lead the Tigers to a come-from-behind victory, 26-24, over Florence.

Crowley would prefer that his young team get off to a fast start rather than play catch up. But he'll take the victory.

"They're rising to the occasion," Crowley said. "It happened last week. It happened this week and I don't really want to get into these kinds of games on a weekly basis but it's nice to see that these kids have that kind of fire."

Although Haynes was dressed, he wasn't feeling well and played little. So tailback Charles Still worked harder. The sophomore rushed 21 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns, his first TDs of the season.

Still scored on runs of 16 and 15 yards in the first and fourth periods. His first score helped trim New Egypt's lead to 13-8 after a two-point conversion run by Jamil Lindsey. Still's fourth-quarter touchdown and Spencer's rushing conversion narrowed New Egypt's advantage to 19-16.

"Coach wants us to start off in the first quarter but sometimes things happen that can change the game," Still said.

Those things involved Wilson's special teams' miscues that gave New Egypt excellent field position before each of its scores.

Following a bad punt and a fake punt that went badly, the Warriors took possession of the ball on Wilson's 36-yard line and then at the Wilson 21. Both times, the short field resulted in New Egypt touchdowns that gave the Warriors an early 13-0 lead.
