Morning Report: Even the porn industry wants a bailout

Finally, in this era of unprecedented government bailouts, there is an industry worthy of our tax dollars.

Finally, in this era of unprecedented government bailouts, there is an industry worthy of our tax dollars.

In a story that no sportswriter could invent, CNN last night reported that another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis unfolds.

Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said yesterday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

Things must be tough all over.

Ouch. Vandals in State College, Pa., have added injury to insult.

Joe Paterno returned last weekend from watching his team get blown out by Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.

Later that weekend - police estimate sometime Sunday - vandals apparently cut off the bronzed glasses that were a part of the statue of the fabled coach that stands outside Beaver Stadium.

The statue, which weighs more than 900 pounds, was unveiled in November 2001. It was created by Angelo DiMaria of Bush Designs in Reading.

Waylon, Willie and Kerry? Yahoo Sports recently reported that Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins dreams of a new career after football.

Collins has a music publishing company called Blue Q Music, and he's working with Stuart Dill, an accomplished manager who has worked with Freddy Fender, the Wreckers, and Joe Dee Messina.

Collins, like many country music stars, sings about his past troubles with alcohol.

For instance, in a song titled "I Don't Need the Whiskey Anymore," Collins wrote of his girlfriend, "I still get intoxicated but my head ain't quite as sore."

There must be something about living in Nashville that turns even a Pennsylvania native into a George Strait wannabe.

Finally. Phillies closer-turned-broadcaster Mitch Williams will be among the speakers next Thursday at the Reading Hot Stovers annual banquet.

Former Pittsburgh Pirate Dave Parker also will be at the 6:45 p.m. dinner at the Riveredge Inn & Conference Center, Route 183, Reading.

There also will be a silent auction.

Steve Degler, who broadcasts La Salle basketball in addition to Reading Phillies games, will be the master of ceremonies.
