Biron and Flyers sink Isles, 4-1
Danny Briere posted a three-point evening for the Flyers as his line was a major force at even strength and on the power play.
The victory gave the Flyers 86 points, giving them sole possession of seventh place in the NHL's Eastern Conference, two points ahead of idle Boston.
Marty Biron became the first Flyers goalie and only the third in NHL history to earn six victories against the Islanders in a season. He is 6-0 against New York.
For the first time in seven games, the Flyers scored multiple power-play goals, finishing with three. The last time? March 8 against these same Islanders, when the Flyers pumped in four power-play goals.
The Flyers led by 2-0 when Briere took a crossing pass from Vinny Prospal and scored his 29th goal at 5 minutes, 34 seconds of the third period on a power play. At 7:59, Scott Hartnell took a Prospal pass and scored to put the game out of reach.
Biron was strong in the final period, bringing chants of "Marty, Marty" from the crowd. The goalie denied Josef Vasicek at the right post immediately after Miroslav Satan had made it 4-1 at 15:33.
Since Prospal began playing with Briere on Feb. 28, the two have been on the ice as line mates for nine goals and 11 assists in 13 games, including tonight's contest.
The other wing on Briere's line has been R.J. Umberger or Hartnell. But Briere and Prospal have really clicked.
"It's critical right now," Briere said. "We've been in playoff mode for a little while now. Obviously, having the chance to play with Vinny there is a chemistry. . . . Our line has found some chemistry and it is a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can give our team that little boost to make it into the playoffs."
The Briere-Prospal chemistry was evident at 12:01 of the opening period as Prospal broke a scoreless tie with his third goal as a Flyer. Working a five-on-three power play, Briere took the puck from Mike Knuble and skated to below the left circle, then centered the puck across the crease.
All Prospal had to do was take a swipe at it for his 32d goal this season.
Up to that point, the Flyers had quite a few chances against goalie Joey MacDonald that either missed the net or were blocked.
"When you have a five-on-three, you have lots of time to position your player," Briere said. "Their players were all stagnant and I was trying to get myself in a good passing lane. . . . I knew where [Prospal] was and it was just up to me to wait as long as I could to get into that good passing lane."
Bill Guerin cracked Biron's neck guard during the opening minute of the second period with a hard slapshot from the right circle. Biron handed his face mask to the equipment staff and had to don his backup mask while it was repaired.
Braydon Coburn has developed a nice one-timer from the right circle this season. He gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead with that kind of shot at 9:36 of the second period during a power play. It was his ninth goal but his first in six games.
Coburn credited Jaroslav Modry for a pinpoint pass. "He really just kind of laid it in for me and I was able to get a good shot off," Coburn said.
