Fire Damages AC Pier

A three-alarm fire of undetermined origin seriously damaged Schiff's Central Pier on Atlantic City's boardwalk Saturday night. Officials said there were no injuries.

The blaze broke out about 6:30 p.m. Flames blackened the beige concrete facade and sent a dense plume toward the ocean. Fire fighters shut down a block-long section of the boardwalk as the fire quickly escalated to three alarms. "It was a citywide response," siad Joseph Nolan, deputy Atlantic City police chief.

The pier, which has been damaged in the past by hurricanes and fires, contains a number of amusement rides and shops. Witnesses said the fire broke shortly after a pizza shop closed its doors for the day.
