South Jersey man killed in crash on Black Horse Pike

A motorist was killed yesterday when his car spun out of control and slammed into two trees after he swerved to avoid a vehicle that suddenly appeared in his path on the Black Horse Pike in Monroe Township, police say.

The driver of the car the victim sought to avoid faces possible motor vehicle violation charges following completion of the investigation, police said.

Killed was Joshua A. Goetz, 30, of Egg Harbor Township.

Police said Goetz as driving his 2006 Scion TC eastbound on the pike (Route 322) about 5:20 p.m. when Louis A. Gatti, 30, entered the highway in his 2000 Honda Civic from Karen Drive, intending to turn left.

Goetz swerved left to avoid the Honda then pulled a hard right to avoid entering the westbound lanes of the pike, police said. His car then spun out of control for about 200 feet, crossing the two eastbound lanes of the highway before hitting one tree and then another.

Goetz, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:38 p.m., police said.
