Knox to launch ad blitz in race for governor

Democrat Tom Knox of Philadelphia was set to begin his campaign for governor today with a video ad on the Internet and an e-mail blast to 800,000 Pennsylvanians.

Knox, 68, who ran in the Democratic primary for Philadelphia mayor in 2007, is expected to largely finance his own campaign with the millions of dollars he has accumulated from decades in the insurance and banking industries.

Knox said he would base his campaign on calls for reform in Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania is one of the few states with no limits on campaign contributions. Knox said he would work to impose them.

He said he would also work to ban gifts and free meals to state officials from lobbyists, require public officials to quit before running for office and eliminate WAMs (or "walking around money") - the pool of funds that legislators use for special projects in their home districts.

Knox joins a Democratic primary field that includes announced candidates Dan Onorato, the Allegheny County executive, and Joe Hoeffel, a Montgomery County commissioner. State Auditor General Jack Wagner and Scranton Mayor Chris Dougherty also have said they will seek the nomination.

Two Republicans, state Attorney General Tom Corbett and U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach of Chester County, have announced plans to run.

Sorry Know but if you can't make it in Philadelphia, you can't make it anywhere. Do yourself a favor and save your money. You can't pull a Corzine in Pennsylvania.

Far Out Phoney - Maybe he's rich because he works for a living. - I like Knox, and think he would make a good Mayor. Far Out Phoney, if either Knox or Corsine were Republicans, you would call them self made men who served their country ----

Funny janann, but that what Democrats have long labeled the Republicans without inhibitions. It's all part of the class divide strategy the dems are known for. Hypocrisy is such a pain sometimes.

Hmmm...So Nutter beat Knox in the race for Mayor because of Nutter's public speaking ability (and Knox's lack thereof), but had little real-world experience balancing a budget. Now we're paying the price. I wonder if people who remember this will be more likely to consider Knox for Governor. Though I hope everyone realizes Knox is really a Republican & only switched parties to run for Mayor.

He used his run and loss for mayor as a lauching pad for his run and loss for governor. His idea of reform is to a ban on gifts and meals, making public officials quite before running for office and eliminate WAMs? That's got me all excited. How long did it take him to come up with that?
